Manhattan: Houston Street (East) - Eldridge Street

(1) East Houston Street, south side, west from and including Eldridge to and including Chrystie Streets, showing the Sunshine Theatre, bearing Nos. 141-143, between Eldridge and Forsyth Streets. Also shown is construction work in progress on the Independent System Subway (Eighth Ave. Subway). The clearance was created by the demolition of the block of houses which faced on the north side of East Houston and the south side of 1st Streets. The cleared area is now (1937) a playground. On the extreme right is visible a portion of 1st Street, and in the background, a portion of the Third Ave. Elevated Line running at this point on the Bowery.
