Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 23rd Street (East)

Madison Avenue, east side, from E. 23rd (right) to 24th Streets, showing the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. tower under construction at the S. E. corner of the latter point. Upon this site formerly stood the old (1854) Madison Square Presbyterian Church. In the deal for this property the Insurance Co. undertook the replacement of same. That appears at the lower left location. Subsequently (about 1928) this will be replaced by an office building. This in turn (after 1940) will be razed and the site form a corner of a block square structure. Views 1 and 2 bear no date; No. 3 being photographed October 10, 1908. Note in the earlier photos the Taft and Sherman banner suspended over E. 23rd Street.
