Manhattan: Houston Street (East) - Chrystie Street

(1) 109 to 95 East Houston Street, south side, west from but not including (left, not shown) Chrystie Street, to the Bowery, showing St. Augustine's Chapel (Trinity Parish) at Nos. 109-105, and the 11-story Fisher Building (Nos. 103-97). Also shown, at the N.W. corner of Second Ave., is construction work in progress on the Independent System Subway (Eighth Ave. subway) after demolition of the houses which formerly occupied the site. St. Augustine's Chapel was erected in 1876 and is considered to be a striking architectural feature of New York. It has two parts, a mission house and the church proper. The mission house contains a large hall, guild and school-rooms. The work is almost entirely among the poorer classes of the neighborhood and includes social activities of a varied nature.
