Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 24th Street

(1) Madison Square, southwestern portion, looking northeast across the park at the tower of Madison Square Garden. In the foreground is the statue of William H. Seward, from a design by Randolph Rogers; and at the right is the brownstone steeple of the Madison Square Presbyterian Church (1854-1906), Madison Avenue at S. E. corner of 24th Street. Dr. Charles Parkhurst was pastor of this church, and from its pulpit launched his famous attack on Tammany Hall which drove Croker into exile, and swept a reform administration into power. To the right of the Church is the Metropolitan Life Building, whose expansion will destroy this church and its successor, built on the N. E. corner. About 1905. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection. (2) The same at a later date. Note the additional large buildings on the 24th to 25th Streets block.
