Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 100th Street

Madison Avenue, at the N.W. corner of 100th Street. The view shows a Squatters Settlement, consisting of 1 and 2-story frame shacks. Trees in the background are on the Fifth Avenue side of Central Park. Note the paved condition of the Avenue and the street car tracks thereupon. This photo appeared in the New York Sun of February 11, 1929 as No. 122 in the series titled "Old N.Y. in Pictures" and was identified as Amsterdam Avenue. The corrected location is attributable to Mr. Hoffman of the New York Historical Society who bases his identification on a view taken from atop the Ruppert house at Fifth Avenue and 97th Street.
