Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 101st Street

Madison Avenue (left, not seen), at the S.W. corner of E. 101st Street, showing a squatter colony occupying the block bounded by 101st and 100th Streets, Madison to Fifth Avenues. The photographer is viewing southwestward towards Central Park which borders on the far side of the latter thoroughfare. Note the unpaved condition of 101st Street. A companion view to this was published in the New York Sun of February 11, 1929 as No. 122 in the series titled "Old N.Y. in Pictures" and gave as the location, Amsterdam Avenue at 100th Street. Mr. Hoffman of the New York Historical Society identifies same as the above and bases his statement on the vista seen in a photograph taken atop the Ruppert house at Fifth Avenue and 97th Street.
