Manhattan: 1st Street - 1st Avenue

(1) 1st Street, north side, from First Avenue to a point just east of Second Avenue. September 20, 1930. P. L. Sperr. (2) The same, at a slightly earlier date, showing a more extensive view, to and including the Bowery. At the left appears East Houston Street, west from Eldridge Street. The cleared area, between 1st and East Houston Streets was created by the demolition of the buildings which formerly occupied the south side of the former and the east side of the latter streets, to facilitate the construction of the Independent System (Eighth Ave.) Subway.
